TEACHER’S REPORT........Sandy Girton

Sandy is a student in class 3F. This term she is studying English, mathematics, general science and history. I hope that next term she will also take geography and art.

Unfortunately Sandy’s work is very poor, and I think this is because she misses so many lessons. I know that she enjoys English and general science, and she usually comes to my history class. The reason her truancy may be her parents. Apparently Mrs. Girton has left her husband and is living in a hotel. So Sandy’s father expects her to stay at home and do the cooking and cleaning in her mother’s place. I have written to Mr. Girton and at the moment I am waiting for him to phone me.

 M. F. Hughes

National holidays are not welcomed by all members of community. Some people dislike the interruption in their usual routine. If they are normally work on a Wednesday, it upsets them to find that a particular Wednesday is a public holiday. They are unable to readjust to the fact and the day is wasted in an atmosphere of restless searching for something to occupy the time. Others dislike the exaggerated feeling of obligation to indulge in feasting, and eat and drink unnecessarily large quantities with secret reluctance merely to please an enthusiastic host. Yet others prefer solitude to accompany a free day and derive no pleasure from sharing their favourite spots with one day invaders. The public holidays robs them of their freedom to be alone in surroundings of their choice. A group of people who vie these holidays with some horror are those engaged in expanding the economy. National holidays represent a loss of production, and if the holidays falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday there is an understandingly high rate of absenteeism on Monday or the Friday

Present Perfect Simple or Present Perfect Continuous

Read:

The present perfect and present perfect continuous tenses do not have the same uses.

Study carefully the differences between them:

I’m tired because I’ve been cutting the grass

2 We use both tenses to talk about things that began in the past and have gone on up the present.

I’ve owned this bicycle since I was fifteen

We use the present perfect to talk about something staying the same and the present perfect continuous to talk about something happening

I’ve been riding this bicycle since I was fifteen

...Malcom has been working very hard all this year, because he is sitting some examinations this month and he is determined to win a scholarship to study history at the University of Oxford. Although the sun has been shining all day today, he has been sitting at home reading about the history of the French Revolution. Fortunately he adores books, especially history books, and he isn’t interested in games. In any case he hasn’t enough time for sport, as he spends all his time and money on books.

His younger brother James is totally different. He is bored with school and studying, but he is very keen on games. He loathes books, especially the they oblige him to read at school. He never stays indoors when the weather is reasonably fine, and today he has been paying tennis for hours with his friends. He is fond of football, but tennis is his favourite sport and,

although he is only 16, he is the school champion and he has already won several tournaments. When he is old enough, he hopes to become a professional player, so he spends a lot of time practising and trying to improve his game.
